Bangladesh’s state-owned flag carrier “MV Banglar Joyjatra” has been left stranded at the Port of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
On Monday, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) Managing Director M Mahmudul Malek told bdnews24.com that the vessel is currently berthed at the port’s jetty.
He said the crew were advised to remain cautious and stay safe. “All sailors on board are safe and are maintaining regular contact with their family members.”
Unloading operations from the ship have been halted amid rising regional tension.
The vessel, owned by the BSC, has 31 Bangladeshi sailors on board.
The “MV Banglar Joyjatra” arrived at Jebel Ali on Feb 27 carrying 38,800 metric tonnes of steel coils from Mesaieed port in Qatar.
The BSC currently operates a fleet of seven vessels. Apart from Joyjatra, none of the corporation’s ships are operating in the Gulf region.
The remaining six vessels are engaged in commercial operations at ports in the United States, Pakistan, Canada, Russia, Senegal and Liberia, officials said.
Malek said the corporation is maintaining regular online communication with the crew.
“They have been instructed to keep sufficient food and water, and to remain prepared for any contingency,” he added.
Iran has carried out strikes in Dubai, similar to attacks reported in other Middle Eastern countries.
Three people, including one Bangladeshi national, were killed.
The Jebel Ali port in Dubai is also considered to be at potential risk of attack.
